Product with a Conscience: MyFitnessPal

MyFitnessPal is an app for daily calorie logging. I’ve used it on and off for the last five years to I’ve had to drop a few pounds. Recently, MyFitnessPal has added a social feature. The feature includes a personal newsfeed for each user. It allows users to connect and view each other’s newsfeeds. The app also auto posts to the newsfeed at key moments such as when a user “completes” their food logging for the day.

The other day when I went to post my update, this image appeared ->

Since my calories for the day were below the recommended minimum, the app did the following:

  1. Displayed the healthy minimum calories

  2. Explained the dangers of eating too less

  3. Prevented me from logging the day or sharing it on my newsfeed

  4. Explained how to safely meet my goals

By doing so, the app put my wellbeing at the forefront. How refreshing!

Way to go, MyFitnessPal, for your high ethical standards and for designing a product with a conscience!

Note: MyFitnessPal is also available as a desktop product.
